Movies you loved that everyone else hated

Just the opposite of the other thread really, what films did you love that no-one else particularly seemed to like.

For me, one that comes to mind is Kill Bill, my friends hate it with a passion but I love it to death. Also Hairspray, but to be fair I can understand my friends hating that .

Long one here. These are all based off of the opinions of my family and/or friends but the reviews didn't treat most of these titles kindly either. Though a handful are prestigious award winners/nominees.

    • Jawbreaker (One of the best high school movies of all time IMO)
    • Catacombs
    • Event Horizon
    • The Rules of Attraction
    • The Island
    • Head Over Heels
    • Uptown Girls
    • Raising Helen
    • Million Dollar Baby (Everybody I know thinks it is boring and doesn't like it because Hilary Swank is the lead?)
    • Cabin Fever
    • Shallow Hal (Ugh Gwyneth's character makes me cry when her feelings are hurt)
    • The Beach
    • 21 Grams ("it's not in linear order omg" So?)
    • How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days
    • Urban Legend
    • Brokeback Mountain ("it wouldnt be adored if it was about straight love" Uh it wouldn't be the same movie at all if it was about straight love)
    • The Girl Next Door
    • The Sweetest Thing
    • Vanilla Sky
    • Love Actually (>:O I've been called a sissy for liking this. Nobody I know likes it at all.)
    • Lost in Translation (Everybody seems to like it except for the people I've come across)

As well as countless other slashers/torture porn movies and cheesy chick flicks. I watch movies for what they are, not what I expect of them or want.

PS - I just rewatched Kill Bill last night actually! Well. Vol.1. I love it but I don't remember liking Vol.2 that much. Too much slow dialogue that never seemed to lead anywhere.

The ones I bolded I all like or LOVED. Lost in Translation is my favourite movie of this decade. The Island is amazingly underrated, The Rules of Attraction is hilarious and such a cult film with me and my friends, 21 Grams has some brilliant acting, BM is a modern classic, and The Sweetest Thing is ridiculously hilarious. I sorta like Love Actually as well, mostly for Emma Thompson, who's ah-mazing in it.

my list, with general complaints they are associated with
    • Closer (too crude and heartless)
    • Lost & Delirious (too melodramatic)
    • Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events (too uneven)
    • Sylvia (too depressing)
    • The New World (too long and slow-paced)
    • Me And You And Everyone We Know (too weird)
    • Titus (too anachronistic and messy)
    • Magnolia (too long and complicated)
    • A.I. Artificial Intelligence (too intelligent)
    • Eyes Wide Shut (too slow-paced)
    • Marie Antoinette (too light)

I love the Jurassic Park films TBH, the action is kinda fierce, I'm not too into intellectual films. Oh and Honey because of the awesome soundtrack and Jessica Alba . I'll probably be able to think of some more soon

Was The Island that one with the robots or something?

It's the one where Ewan McGregor and Scarlett Johansson are clones on the run.

Very futurstic, very entertaining, very slick and shiny. Grade A popcorn movie.

    Uptown Girls
IA. IDK why everyone hates it, it's so cute and Dakota's acting is so divalicious.

    I loved Magnolia, and A.I.

Marie Antoinette I don't LOVE but I still enjoyed the hell out of it. Same with that Lemony Snicket Movie. Have yet to see any of the others though. Well. I tried to watch The New World but I gave up on it after about an hour. (And I NEVER do that with movies. I always watch in hopes that it'll get better)

Oh. Closer. I thought it was alright but I suspect it may be the kind of movie that you have to watch twice to truly appreciate it. I was let down when I was watching it but I often think about it and how badly I want to see it again.

Yay for the Magnolia and A.I. love.

The New World takes a couple of viewings to really appreciate. I remember the first time I watched it, I got restless at the pace but stuck with it until the end, which blew me away. And since it was so lush and rich with natural beauty, I decided to give it a second chance and was amazed by it. It then became one of those movies that was on heavy rotation in my DVD player.

Closer is very theatrical, so if people don't like watching dramatic very adult theatre plays, I wouldn't suggest watching it. I'll be the first to admit it's not for everyone but I thought the film (particularly the acting) took it to such an elevated emotional plane, that it deserves to be recognized.

Really? I thought the acting in Closer was quite amature, and the plot tended to drag unnecessarily at times. The whole movie was all on one wave link, not really creating a climax or anything. Which left me thinking, meh.

The thought the four leads were fantastic, esp. Clive and Natalie.

I agree about the plot, particularly in the third act. But I didn't really mind it so much because of the actors carrying it.

Okay i didn't even see the movie and i made that stuff up lol.

  16. #16
LOL, you were right about the plot though.
