    Pyrophobia 2

Last season, Pyromaniac J'Tia Taylor burned away the competition. Will this season turn out differently?

For this season, to keep things fresh and try for a better sense of balance to the game, I have changed some of the voting procedures. For your convenience, I've highlighted these changes in blue text.

    The Story

After receiving a cryptic threat in the mail—blackmail—you arrive at a mysterious tower in the middle of nowhere to face your accuser. To your surprise, you are not the only one there. Everyone claims to have received similar threats. In the middle of the night, you are awakened by the sounds of screams. A fire! You try to escape, but the exit has been barricaded. All of you are locked inside the tower, with the fire burning.

At the top of the tower is a glider—with just enough room that one of you might be able to escape. But do you really trust these people to go find help? And worse—what if someone in the tower with you started the fire?

Welcome to my new game, Pyrophobia. In this game, you will have to balance competing interests. Your goal is to be the last player standing and escape the tower before it burns down. You can help suppress the fire, but you face the risk of elimination. Worse, one of the players is the Pyromaniac—the mysterious threat who started the fire and wants to see everything burn. Can you avoid getting voted out, figure out the Pyromaniac, and escape before the fire burns down the tower?

This game is relatively simple and should not take more than 2-3 weeks to complete. It could even be much shorter than that, if the players make bad enough choices. For example, like the choices they made during season one!

    Voting

The structure of this game is relatively simple. Each round, there is a vote, and the results of that vote will determine who is eliminated (if anyone), what happens to the fire, and whether or not the game has ended.

Each round, the players will be given two ballots for free. I will tell you how many ballots you currently have in your inventory. This season, you will be required to cast at least two ballots each round, meaning that you cannot stockpile ballots that you were given for free. For ballots that you are required to spend, you have have two options: (1) cast it against the fire to help with fire suppression; or (2) cast it against another player still in the game.

For any extra ballots you managed to earn, you have the added third option of saving them for future rounds.

Each player must respond within the allotted time (24 hours, with up to a 24-hour extension available maximum). If you fail to vote by the deadline, your ballots will be discarded—including any that you've saved from previous rounds. Any ballots used improperly (to self-vote or vote for something other than the fire or another player remaining in the game) will be discarded.

    Possible Vote Outcomes

    • Unanimous Fire Suppression: A vote in which all ballots are cast again the fire will result in a highly successful fire suppression effort. The fire will decrease by one level, unless it is already at the minimum. No elimination will occur during this round.
    • Majority Fire Suppression: If at least fifty percent of ballots cast are against the fire, the fire will remain at its current level. The player with the most votes will be eliminated. Surviving players will recover ballots cast against them for use in future rounds. For example, if three ballots were cast against Lluvy in this scenario, but she wasn't eliminated, she will receive an extra three ballots to use in the next round.
    • Failed Fire Suppression: If fewer than fifty percent of ballots are cast against the fire, the fire will increase by one level. The player who receives the most votes will be eliminated. Surviving players will recover ballots cast against them for use in future rounds, like in the above scenario.
    • No Fire Suppression: The doomsday scenario. If a vote takes place where no votes are cast against the fire, the fire will immediately burn down the tower and end the game. This includes the scenario where no votes are cast at all.

    Vote Tiebreakers

In the event that an elimination will take place (majority and failed fire suppression), but multiple players are tied for the most votes, the following tiebreakers will be used:

    • First Tiebreaker: the player who has cast the most ballots against the fire over the course of the game will be eliminated.
    • Second Tiebreaker: If there is a tie on the previous measure, the player with the most ballots remaining in their inventory will be eliminated.
    • Third Tiebreaker: If there is a tie on that measure, the player with the fewest past votes against them will be eliminated.
    • Final Tiebreaker: If no resolution remains after the previous three measures are exhausted, the players still tied will all be eliminated.

I will not reveal which tiebreakers were used/necessary during the results itself, but this will be revealed at the conclusion of the game. Obviously, if multiple players are eliminated though, you will know why.

    The Fire

The fire will start at Level 0. If it reaches Level 6, it will overwhelm the tower and burn it down, causing the game to end. Note: this may be adjusted based on the cast size. I will announce the game over criteria once the cast is finalized.

Based on the possible vote outcomes (see above), the fire may raise, lower, or maintain its current level. It's also possible for the fire to immediately flare up out of control and end the game. The fire is an ever-present threat to your game that must be taken into consideration if you wish to win.

    The Pyromaniac

At the beginning of the game, one player will be selected via a random drawing to be the Pyromaniac. This is a saboteur role. The Pyromaniac's goal is to survive long enough to burn down the tower. If they are still in the game and the fire burns down the tower, the Pyromaniac will be declared the winner of the game.

    Results & Information Management

At the beginning of each voting round, I will contact you privately telling you the current number of ballots in your inventory.

Vote results will be fully anonymous, so you will need to build trust and figure out who wasn’t trustworthy if something went wrong.

The fire results will always be processed first, and then the elimination, meaning that the Pyromaniac could meet their win condition even in a round where they are the player with the most ballots cast against them.

I will reveal the vote spread and the eliminated player, but not who received the unsuccessful votes. However, you will be able to figure out how many votes you received based on the ballot count I send you at the beginning of each round. Your current ballot count is the sum of: 2 (free ballots) + Any saved ballots from a past round + Any ballots cast against you in the previous round. If you want to stockpile ballots, you will have to arrange for people to vote against you without receiving enough votes to be eliminated. To help you track ballot counts, I will announce the total number of ballots currently in the game economy at the start of each round.

I will not tell you if you have voted out the Pyromaniac or not. It’s up to you to figure out what happened.

The use of screenshots to “prove” how you voted is prohibited. I will not validate any screenshots or confirm how anyone voted. If you want to know how people voted, you will have to talk to them and figure out if they are lying or not using your own reasoning skills.

Once you are eliminated, you are considered strategically “dead.” You are prohibited from communicating any game information in your elimination posts or post-elimination communications, to preserve the integrity of the game. This includes outing yourself as the Pyromaniac, or as not the Pyromaniac.

    How to Win

For all players except the Pyromaniac, your win condition is straightforward: vote out all other players before the fire engulfs the tower. But, this is easier said than done! Here are some things to consider:

    • Collective Good vs. Individual Advantage: It helps everyone except the Pyromaniac to suppress the fire. However, any votes that you, personally, spend on the fire mean that you can’t spend those votes targeting other players… who might be voting for you! Your goal could be to convince other people to cast votes against the fire while you secretly don’t vote against the fire. But, if everyone thinks this way, the fire will continue to grow.
    • Player Culture: It may be to your advantage to try to establish a system where players dedicate a certain amount of each vote toward suppressing the fire… but the Pyromaniac has no interest in cooperating with this. And of course, given the previous statement, your other players might not either.
    • Ballot Count: Saving ballots is harder this season as I am requiring you to always spend at least two ballots per turn. Thus, to grow your ballot count, you will need receive votes without arriving at a plurality that would eliminate you.
    • The Pyromaniac: It seems like it would be in your best interest to identify and eliminate the Pyromaniac as quickly as possible. But, what if it’s someone you’re working with? Since the Pyromaniac is likely to cast all of their ballots against other players, can they be weaponized to achieve your own agenda?
    • Unanimous Fire Suppression: If the fire is getting really out of hand, you might prioritize organizing a one-round truce that attempts to get a unanimous fire suppression vote. The problem? The more people who are voting against the fire, the more it empowers an individual to control the elimination. A single vote could eliminate a player. Plus, if you haven’t voted out the Pyromaniac yet… well, that could be a problem.
    • Avoiding the Doomsday Scenario: The one thing that could end your game immediately is a vote with no fire suppression ballots cast. But are you going to want to risk wasting one of your ballots just to ensure this doesn’t happen? How can you know for sure that someone else will cast a ballot to avoid this? Worse, if everyone decides to hoard all their ballots, this could be triggered that way as well.
    • The Endgame: Suppose you’re at the final round. Will you spend every ballot you saved up to eliminate the other finalist? What if they do the same? You could still trigger the doomsday scenario even at the very end of the game. Is it more important for you to win, or are you willing to see the world burn if you can’t?

One player will be randomly selected at the beginning of the game as the Pyromaniac. The Pyromaniac has a special set of win conditions. They will only win the game if they are a surviving player in a round where the fire engulfs the tower. Note that this means, if the Pyromaniac somehow survives all the votes and is the last player standing, they will lose if the fire didn’t reach a high enough level. That would be a hilariously weird ending, wouldn’t it?

    Some considerations for the Pyromaniac:

    • The Secret: As the Pyromaniac, you are the only player in the game who knows for sure who the Pyromaniac is. But what are you going to do with that information? This information gives you leverage, but if you give away the secret, that leverage evaporates. You could immediately become a huge target.
    • Influence: For you to win, the fire must continue to grow while you remain in the game. The quickest way to victory would be a ballot where no fire suppression votes are cast. The more divided and less organized the other players are, the more likely this is to happen. The more information you have about player behavior, the more opportunities you might have to instigate the outcomes you want.
    • Weaponize the Role: If you are confident in your skills, perhaps there is a benefit to outing your role to a trusted player and working with them. The catch? Loose lips sink ships. The other player might also reveal your identity once they don’t see you as beneficial to their gameplay anymore.
    • Subtlety: If you are too overt in your sabotage, players might figure out your role without you having to tell them. But if you do nothing, that lowers the chance that you can get your plans through. If the players are messy enough, perhaps you won’t need to help push things your way. But, it’s likely you’ll have to do something to ensure that you aren’t voted out and that the fire continues to rise.

In the scenario where the fire engulfs the tower but the Pyromaniac has already been eliminated, no one wins! Don't say I didn't warn you if this ends up happening.
